It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.

As an author, I sometimes feel like the wicked witch. My job is to find someone happily minding their own business, and mess up their happy little lives until they’re upset enough to get off their rump and go change something. It’s seldom a good thing in a character’s life when the author looks at them and says, “You’re happy, aren’t you? My goodness, you’re trying to slip off into a quiet happily-ever-after! Well, don’t get too comfortable my pretty, because I’ve got plans for your future.” The evil cackle is optional, of course, but I find it refreshing.

Do they always flirt with biblical quotes?” Asil asked Tad.
In long-suffering tones, Tad said, “They can flirt with the periodic table or a restaurant menu. We’ve learned to live with it. Get a room, you guys.

She stood, in a room of crumbling plaster, pressed to the window pane, looking up at the unattainable form of everything she loved. She did not know the nature of her loneliness. The only words that named it were; This is not the world I expected.

Well, I found out that Heidi and the Prince had been-” She flushed. “You know…It was incredibly stupid of me not to guess, but I didn’t because nobody brought me up to know anything useful.

-from Magic Flutes/The Reluctant Heiress by Eva Ibbotson

Tessa (a princess without property and with little money) to the man who has purchased her family home when attempting to explain why she hadn’t noticed her childhood friend and best friend were in love and that her best friend was pregnant

The events in the book take place after the first World War and while the princess is from Austria, it illustrates how the Crawley sisters were also likely raised (this is also indicated by comments by and scenes involving Lady Mary to the effect of never having been to school, learning practical things, and showing how innocent and sheltered she, her sisters, and likely her contemporaries).

How could Lady Mary be expected to have any clue about adult relationships and sex?

The answer to that is she did not, which is demonstrated by “Will it hurt?”

Also, based upon the mores of the day, once Pamuk entered her room, her ability to consent was taken from her.

We can also arrive at this same set of facts (the conclusion, not the book/series) by reading history.

Be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
